Peter is a recognized thought leader in data privacy and digital media with international experience as a former advertising executive, technologist, lobbyist and association leader and as a current educator, consultant and keynote speaker.
Peter helped to grow the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) from a small professional community to the world’s largest privacy association in his roles as Director of Certification, Assistant Director and then as Vice President. He helped to establish the IAPP’s Canadian office in Ottawa (2009) as well as the annual IAPP Canada Privacy Symposium in Toronto (2008), which remains the largest annual privacy conference in the country.
Peter led the creation of the world's first professional certification in privacy and data protection: the IAPP’s Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP). He followed this with the launch of the CIPP-Canada (CIPP/C) as well as credentials for European data protection (CIPP/E), privacy in information technology (CIPT), privacy operations (CIPM) and a masters-level certification known today as the Fellow of Information Privacy (FIP).
Presently, over 50,000 professionals globally hold one or more of the now eight different IAPP credentials which certify knowledge in global privacy laws, technologies, standards and practices.
Peter is a veteran of the advertising business with executive roles at ad agencies, Wells Rich Greene BDDP and MVBMS Partners/EURO RSCG and at ad trade associations, the NAI and the 4As. He served as the first Managing Director of the US-based Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA) and led the expansion of the DAA “Your Ad Choices” consumer privacy preference program.
Peter formed the nucleus of the earliest digital media team at WIRED magazine and its companion venture, Hotwired, the very first ad-supported Website on the Internet. He also has held leadership roles at technology companies, CMGI and Dataxu (now Roku).
In 2024, Peter was nominated for Privacy Educator of the Year (“Privacy Leader: Academia/Thought Leadership”) by the PICCASO-Canada Privacy Awards, a juried recognition of excellence in Canadian data privacy and information security.
